Ben Ott grew up in Cologne, so it’s no surprise that his first beer at 40ft was a Kolsch, and a very good one at that. Made using Golden Promise, one of the finest English malts, Larger (not a typo!) is a clean, superbly drinkable pale beer with just enough prickly hop bitterness. Ott, until recently the head brewer at Truman’s, works out of three shipping containers in a Dalston yard, a situation that belies his talent and depth of brewing knowledge. He wears a flat cap, a sartorial decision that can be at least partially explained by his half-Scouse heritage; his mum’s side of the family comes from Aigburth.
