Wenlock and Essex
The Essex Road is like Upper Street’s grubbier (sometimes literally: I once saw a woman relieve herself in the street here, using only a child to shield her from public view), more interesting sibling, and Wenlock and Essex fits right in. Pleasure is on the menu: there are swing doors (which able-bodied adult doesn’t love swing doors?) and lots of lovely beer. Camden, as you’d imagine, are well-represented on the keg front, alongside Thornbridge’s Chiron and BrewDog 5am Saint. The cask ales comes from small, independent brewers and, among the usual suspects, there are bottles of St Austell’s opinion-dividing wheat beer Cloudy Yellow (I love it) and St Peters’ Ruby Red Ale in the fridge.
