The Baring Hall Hotel

And now for something uplifting. The Baring Hall Hotel - an impressive Victorian structure opposite Grove Park Station - re-opened in early 2014 after a campaign to save it from a fate worse than death: being turned into flats. The pub company Antic took it on, and the end result is very, well, Antic-ish: a minimal amount spent on decor, lots of thought about the beer and food, a genuinely genial atmosphere. There are 12 handpumps (where you'll find Adnams, Magic Rock, Tiny Rebel and others) and a short-but-well-chosen bottle list that includes Windsor and Eton and Summer Wine.
